Opal (Watson) Smith

Mrs. Opal Watson Smith, 91 of Tifton passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Tift Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. in the Memorial Chapel of First Baptist Church with Rev. John Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in Oakridge Cemetery.  The family will receive friends before the service from 12:00 – 12:45 P.M. at the church.

Eddie Barnes, Mike Barnes, Jack Watson, Sr. Thad Fulford, Simmy McKeown, Paul Samples, John Jernigan and Jack Watson, Jr. will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Smith was born on April 11, 1927 in Tift County to the late James Jackson Watson and Birdie Mae Owens Watson.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-five years, Emmett Vernon Smith who died July 18, 2012, along with her two sisters Thetis Haire, and Joyce Watson Barnes and her brother Edison Watson.

Mrs. Smith lived in Tifton all of her life and loved her community dearly.  She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Tifton where she was a member of the Mary Youmans’ Sunday School Class. She retired from First Community Bank of Tifton and continued to be involved with her friends from there along with other special groups in the community and her church.  She loved traveling with family and she also enjoyed playing golf.  She was very close to her grandchildren and great grandchild who she loved very much.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; Beth and Dan Greene of Gray, her grandchildren; Danielle and Carl Wheeler, Megan and Daniel Bridges, and Zach Greene and great grandson; Watson Carl Wheeler.
