Mr. Larry Monroe Burkhead, 78, of Omega passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. in the chapel of Albritton Funeral Directors with Pastor Frank Barfield officiating. Interment will follow in Tift Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. The family will receive friends Friday, May 21, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Freddie Causey, Paul Moyer, James Causey, Perry Horton and Johnny Valdez will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Causey, Everett Collins, Wade Glover and Steve Allen.
Mr. Burkhead was born October 3, 1942 in Lumberton, North Carolina to the late James Monroe Burkhead and Dorothy Beatrice Wood Burkhead. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Jean Cantrell Burkhead who died April 23, 2018 and his son, Larry Burkhead, Jr., who died in 1974. Mr. Burkhead was a member of Tift Avenue Baptist Church. He was retired from the United States Army where he served in Korea and Vietnam and was also a retired law enforcement officer. Mr. Burkhead had lived in Tift County for many years and served with the Tift County Sheriff’s Department for thirty years before his retirement. Larry was very proud of his military career where he served the United States Army and retired after twenty years. Larry loved to laugh and joke and enjoyed being around his friends. He was one of seven children and his family was the center of his life. Larry was an active Mason at the Tifton Lodge and a member and former officer with the American Legion in Tifton. He was an outdoorsman and loved to fish.
Mr. Burkhead is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Gina and Wade Glover of Thomasville, Carmen and Dennis Salmon of North Carolina and Tammy Lynn and Bradley Lowder of North Carolina; one son and daughter-in-law, Everett and Sheri Collins of Rock Hill, South Carolina; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three sisters, Brenda and Vince Vangi of San Antonio, TX., Royce and John Schmucker of Paramus, NJ., and Carla Brunson of Livingston, TX.; one brother, Steven and Andrea Allen of Inglewood, FL. Also, he was survived by his special friend, Phyllis Brown of Doerun.
