Dr. John Joseph Hamm was born on May 2, 1937, in New Castle, Indiana and departed this world on November 30, 2024, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia, leaving behind a legacy marked by kindness, intellect, and dedication.

A man of profound integrity, Dr. Hamm received his bachelor's degree in biology from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, where he not only nurtured his academic abilities but also kindled a love that would blossom into a lifelong partnership. It was there, amidst the halls of learning, that he met Judith Marie Daily, the love of his life. Their union was rooted in their shared values of peace, respect, and commitment—values that Dr. Hamm exemplified throughout his life.

He furthered his scholarly pursuits at Purdue University, earning both his Master's and PhD in Entomology. He devoted thirty-seven years of service to the United States Department of Agriculture at the Southern Grain Insects Research Laboratory in Tifton as an esteemed Entomologist working in insect pathology and biological control of insects. His career was distinguished not only by his expertise but also by his unwavering commitment to enriching the lives of others through his work.

Those who knew him personally remember Dr. Hamm as a patient and kind man, possessing a gentle spirit and a temperament that radiated politeness. He enjoyed being a member of the Lions Club and Toastmasters International. He was an avid gardener especially interested in growing Louisiana Iris and Bonsai, often speaking at local garden clubs. Once he retired, he volunteered in the Tifton community, particularly in the Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County where he taught English as a second language and helped individuals obtain their GEDs, showcasing his deep compassion and desire to uplift others. His selfless contributions were a testament to his belief in the power of education and the importance of helping those around him.

Dr. Hamm was predeceased by his beloved parents, Joe M. Hamm and Margaret Grunden Hamm, as well as his brother, Howard Hamm. Along with his wife of sixty-five years, Judith Daily Hamm, he is survived by his daughters, Holly Johnson and Teresa Stevens, and his son-in-law Cary Stevens. The joy of his life continued through his grandchildren: Paul Johnson, Phillip Johnson, Brett Stevens, Brianna Stevens, and Colleen Stevens, along with his niece, Julie Hamm.

As we remember Dr. John Joseph Hamm, we celebrate a life filled with love, learning, and laughter. His legacy, embodied in the lives he touched and the hearts he warmed, will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever be a guiding light to his family and friends, reflecting the values he held dear throughout his remarkable journey.
