John Henry Gurley, a beloved member of the Chula community, passed away at his residence on Monday, March 18, 2024. He was born in Atkinson County, Georgia, on June 30, 1940. John led a fulfilling life dedicated to hard work and faith.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at Tift Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Harsey officiating. The burial will follow at Landmark Baptist Church cemetery where he will be interred by his wife. The family will receive friend from 9:30 to 10:45 A.M. at the church before the service.
In his career, John dedicated thirty-seven years to Tifton Aluminum as a metal racker. His strong work ethic and attention to detail left a lasting impact on those around him. Despite being retired, he never ceased to find joy in staying busy and tending to his garden - a true reflection of his industrious nature.
A man of faith, John's love for the Lord was evident to all who knew him. He was a former trustee and an active member of Tift Avenue Baptist Church. He found solace and companionship in attending church the services, enriching his spiritual journey along the way. His commitment to his beliefs shone through in every aspect of his life.
Mr. Gurley is survived by his four sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Janice Palmer and Gregg Palmer of Valdosta, Georgia; Dave and Penny Gurley and Emory and Angie Gurley of Chula, Georgia; his daughters and son-in-law Margaret Edson and Jennifer and Tommy Byrd both of Andalusia, Alabama. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren. John also leaves behind his brother Clovis Gurley of Douglas and sisters, Calie Williams of Douglas, Catherine Taft and Odessa Taft both of Pearson.
John will forever be remembered as a loving husband of thirty-seven years to Betty Pearl Miller Gurley until her passing on July 20, 2017. Additionally, he is preceded in death by his father Clyde Emory Gurley, mother Fannie Pearson Gurley, and daughter Johnnie Mae Bunting along with eight siblings.
