Dr. Joseph J Day

Dr. Joseph J. Day Jr passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Legacy Village in Tifton, GA.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, December 12 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Divine Saviour Catholic Church with Father Peter Oyenugba and Deacon J. Brian Bergeron officiating. Interment will follow in Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Albritton Funeral Home on Friday, December 11 between 6:00 and 8:00 P.M. Covid precautions are requested by the family.

He was born August 17th, 1930 to Joseph J. Day Sr and Catherine Sherry Day.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years and an older sister Eleanor Kudlach of Tucson, AZ.

Dr. Day received his B.S. degree from the University of Georgia in 1956 and his M.S degree from Auburn University in 1960.  In 1960 Dr. Day completed his Doctorate in math education at Auburn University.

He served in the US Army during the Korean War and received three bronze service stars, one of which was awarded for service in the battle of Heart Break Ridge.

In 1954 he married Martha C. Callaway of Lexington GA. In 1965 he moved his family to Tifton, GA and took the position of Associate Professor of Mathematics at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.  After teaching 34 years, and becoming the Chairman of the Math/Science division at ABAC he retired in 1989 as Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, whereupon he and Martha took numerous cruises and trips abroad.  Their favorite destinations were the old country of Ireland, The Cayman Islands, and Jekyll Island.

He was an active parishioner at Our Divine Savior Catholic Church and served on the Parish Council and in the men's ushering ministry for many years.

Dr. Day loved playing golf at ABAC's Forest Lakes Golf Club with his friends. He also loved bird watching and feeding them in his backyard.

Dr. Day is survived by his son, Jerome Day and his wife, Lori Day of Kennesaw, GA, two grandchildren, Shawn Day and Kelly Day Wood and her husband, Brad Wood, one great great granddaughter, Riley Day, and brother Frank J. Day of Tucson, AZ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Divine Saviour Catholic Church, 1205 Love Avenue, Tifton, Ga. 31794.
